Meaning: Virtue, Steadiness, Strength, Financial Luck, Protection from weather (bad times), Joy, Friendship

Firstly, the Tanuki is not a badger. This is a common misconception.

There are many stories attributed to the Tanuki in Japanese folklore. Statues of Tanuki can be found all over Japan particularly in front of businesses. They usually have disproportionate body parts such as a large belly and oversized testicles. They are shown wearing turtle shell hats and carrying a promissory note (sometimes replaced by an empty purse) in one hand while the other hand holds a sake bottle.

They are also known to tease and mimic humans. In Japan they are considered to be the mischievous counterpart to the Kitsune. Unlike the Kitsune which can be deceptive with ill intent, the Tanuki prefers to disguise itself as a monk to play more harmless pranks.

They are said to be good for business because they have 8 special traits, as follows;

1. Their large bellies signify that they will make rational decisions.

2. The promissory note represents Confidence and Trust.

3. Sake represents Virtue.

4. Their large tail signifies Strength and Steadiness.

5. In Japan large testicles symbolize financial luck.

6. Their large eyes represent their ability to judge situations and make wise decisions.

7. The turtle shell hat they wear represents protection from bad weather or (bad times in general).

8. Their smile represents a friendly attitude toward customers.

Generally, a Tanuki tattoo represents wealth or prosperity but mostly it is just fun and a little silly. They are often seen playing playing drums on their oversized testicles or bellies in more modern depictions. These tattoos aren't meant to be taken too seriously.
