Meaning: good fortune, bravery, honor, elegance, wealth

Peony represent wealth, good fortune and prosperity. They depict that getting great rewards is only possible through great risks.

It is known as the king of flowers because they were grown in the the gardens of Imperial palaces.

Beyond their pleasant scent and attractive appearence they are valued greatly for their medicinal properties, which are believed to ward off evil and ailments.

They are often paired with Shishi (Foo Lions). The ferocity of the lion is tempered by the beauty of the flower.

It is symbolic of risk taking or the samurai's devil-may-care approach to life. A true samurai, according to the Bushido should live each day as if it may be the last.
